Prep first
Before you start
- Blot, don't rub: press a dry towel on any damp spot.
- Check the mattress care label before anything wet touches the spot.
- Keep stained bedding out of the dryer until the color is gone.
- If you can't tell what it is, start with mild soap and cold water.
Orange and reddish-brown marks on a mattress are most often iron from rusty water or a rusting metal source, and whether the mark is iron or something biological decides how you treat it. Chlorine bleach makes iron worse, and a mattress can't take much moisture, so the gentle approach matters more here than on a hard floor. A fresh mark may lift with a light cold-water blot, while an old one might only lighten.
Work out whether the mark is pink, orange or red before you apply anything. Pink stains on mattress fabric need a barely damp cloth, blotted and checked as it dries. If the mark is still there after a couple of rounds, a portable upholstery spot cleaner beats more liquid.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Work out the stain type
Look at the spot in good light and decide what you're dealing with. A hard orange or reddish-brown mark is most likely iron, while a spot that looks like blood or urine is biological and gets its own step. Read the mattress care label or the maker's website before anything wet touches the surface.
Step 2 of 6
Strip the bed and blot the spot
Take off all the bedding and covers and set them aside. If the spot is damp, press a dry towel on it to lift the surface moisture, pressing rather than rubbing.
Step 3 of 6
Blot with mild soap and cold water
Dampen a clean white cloth with cold water and a small amount of mild soap, then dab the spot lightly. Work from the outside edge toward the center, and switch to a clean part of the cloth often so you don't spread the stain.
Step 4 of 6
Treat a biological stain
If the spot looks like blood or urine, sponge it with a detergent solution or apply an enzyme cleaner sparingly. For a urine spot, finish with a rinse of vinegar solution before the drying step.
Tip. If the stain isn't biological, skip this step and go straight to drying.
Step 5 of 6
Let the mattress dry completely
Let the area air dry all the way through before you put the bedding back on. Start in the morning so there's time for it to dry, and dry damp items within 24 to 48 hours, since leftover moisture encourages mold and mildew.
Tip. If the spot still feels cool or damp, give it longer before you judge the result.
Step 6 of 6
Dab vinegar and clear any odor
Once the mattress is fully dry, look for a faint mark that's still there. If you see one, dab a little white vinegar on it with a clean cloth, blot, and let it dry again. If an odor lingers, sprinkle baking soda on the area, leave it for 20 minutes to an hour (up to five hours for strong odors), then vacuum.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on mattress, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light before using any heat. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
Heavy buildup usually takes more than one round.
Heavy or long-standing buildup →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
The orange should transfer to the towel as you blot, and the patch should read lighter once everything has dried through. Judge it only when the mattress is fully dry, since a wet spot reads darker than it will end up. If the color hasn't moved after several rounds and the spot stays put once dry, it has likely set into the fabric, so check the [set-in section](#dried) before anything stronger.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your mattress
Orange on a mattress
Bright orange is the classic iron stain, so it's the one most likely to respond to the basic steps. Blot it with mild soap and cold water, and expect it to lighten as you work rather than vanish in one pass.
Skip the enzyme step unless the spot looks biological, since orange is most often iron. Once it's dry, check for any faint color before deciding on the vinegar dab.
Pink on a mattress
Pink is a color, not a substance, so don't assume it's iron. A pink spot that looks biological, like blood, needs the enzyme step, while one you can't identify should get only mild soap and cold water.
Keep the blotting gentle either way. Once it's dry, the vinegar dab is the only extra step worth trying, and only if color remains.
Red and reddish-brown on a mattress
Reddish-brown stains are most often iron too, and an older one can look darker and more stubborn. Start with the same mild soap and cold water, and expect to make several light passes.
A true red spot, such as fresh blood, is the case where the enzyme step comes into play. Check which kind of red you have before you start, and use the enzyme step first if it's biological.
Heavy or long-standing buildup
An old orange stain has usually dried in place more than once, so it's harder to lift than a fresh one. Repeat the mild soap and cold water step a few more times, letting the spot dry between passes so you can judge the progress.
If the stain has dried hard, dampen it with cold water only and blot again rather than working it harder. Dried iron often fades partway, and that's a realistic result, so don't keep going just to get it perfect.
Once the mattress is fully dry and the stain still shows, the vinegar dab is the one stronger step to add. If it's still there after that, stop, because more chemicals add risk to the mattress for a small gain.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on orange on mattress?
Most home remedies for these stains are designed for other stains, so it's worth knowing what each one does on a mattress. Mild soap and cold water do the lifting on a mattress, and hot water, soaking and solvents are all ruled out.

Chemical safety
Never mix these
Some products in this guide react dangerously with each other. Use them one at a time and rinse with water in between.
Enzyme cleaner + Vinegar
Some enzyme and pet stain removers' makers say not to mix them with vinegar or acidic cleaners, or with other household chemicals.
If they mix by accident: Don't use the mixture; ventilate the room and avoid breathing fumes or touching it; call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for disposal advice or if anyone feels unwell.
What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't use a rust remover on the mattress
Rust removers are strong acids, and a vinegar rinse is the only acid a mattress should get. Some rust removers contain oxalic acid, which is poisonous, so keep them away from the bed.
Don't scrub the stain
Scrubbing pushes the iron deeper into the foam and spreads it past its edges. Blot lightly from the outside in, and lift the cloth often so you're removing the stain instead of grinding it in.
Don't test on the visible spot
Dye removers can strip color and rust removers are strong acids, so try any product on a hidden area first. Give the test patch time to dry before you judge it. If the color changes there, stop.
Don't leave a fresh mark sitting
Iron oxidizes on contact with air, so the mark darkens the longer it sits. Blot a fresh spot straight away with a dry cloth, and keep going until the cloth comes up clean.
Don't ignore a musty smell
Moisture that lingers in a mattress can grow mold, which is a bigger problem than the color. If the area still smells musty after it dries, stop scrubbing and get it checked rather than adding more liquid.
When to call a professional
Bring in a professional if a flood was involved and the water was contaminated, or if mold covers more than 10 square feet of the mattress. For a large orange mark that survives the steps, a professional upholstery cleaner can take it on, so describe the color, its age and the products already used before anyone starts.
Questions
What causes orange stains on a mattress?
Most orange to reddish-brown stains are iron, the same substance that makes rust. It usually comes from water or from metal that's rusting nearby, and it can darken as it meets air. Color alone can't confirm it, so start with the gentle steps.
Why does the orange spot look darker after it dries?
Iron oxidizes when it meets air, so the spot can change color as the area dries. Judge the result only once the mattress is completely dry. Adding more soap while it's still wet only adds moisture.
Is a pink stain on a mattress blood?
It might be, but color alone can't tell you. Pink, red and orange describe colors rather than single substances, so check how the spot behaves before you pick a method. If it looks biological, use the enzyme step; if you can't tell, stick to mild soap and cold water.
Will an old red-brown stain come out completely?
Not always. Old iron can fade a lot without disappearing fully, so judge success by how much lighter the spot looks. The set-in section covers what's realistic.
Can I use the same method on the sheets?
Sheets are a different surface, and they can usually be washed, so they need their own steps. Use the Sheets, Towels & Table Linens guide for them, since its steps are built for washable fabric.
Does baking soda take the stain out?
No. It's only useful for a lingering odor once the mattress is completely dry, so use it after the stain steps are done.
How long before I can make the bed again after spot cleaning?
Wait until the spot is dry all the way through, which is why an early start helps. Open the windows to air the room, and keep the sheets off until the mattress feels fully dry. Anything damp should be dry within 24 to 48 hours, or mold can start to grow.
Is it okay to take the mattress cover off and wash it?
Only when the cover is built to come off, which many aren't. Removing one can cancel the warranty, so read the care label or the maker's website before you pull anything apart. If it's sewn on, spot clean the surface instead.
How do I keep orange stains off my mattress?
A fitted, washable mattress protector is the simplest fix, since it catches spills and rust-colored water before they reach the mattress. Choose one that can be washed, and check its care label before you wash it.
Can I use vinegar on an orange mattress stain?
Vinegar is a backup, not a first step. Use it only if the spot persists after the mild soap and cold water blot, and apply it lightly on a cloth. Never soak the mattress with it, and let the spot dry fully afterward so no odor or moisture is left behind.
