Prep first
Before you start
- Blot, don't rub, and keep the spot as dry as you can.
- Strip the bedding before you touch the stain.
- Check the care label before any cleaner goes near it.
A brown patch on a mattress is most often a tannin mark from coffee, tea or fruit, or a spill that soaked down and oxidized after it dried. Mattresses can't be drenched the way carpet can, so the cleaning has to be light and patient, and a stain that has sunk into the layers below may only fade. If the spot came from blood or urine, the approach changes, and hot water is the wrong move for any of them.
A big brown stain on a mattress takes more patience, so work in small patches and keep each one barely damp. Use white cotton cloths so you can see the color lifting, and skip anything that soaks into the foam. If the spot smells, or you suspect blood or urine, stop and treat it as a different job.

7 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 7
Check the care label first
Read the mattress care label or the maker's website before you start. Then work out what caused the mark, since the location and how it appeared decide which steps apply.
Step 2 of 7
Strip the bed and blot the spot
Take off the bedding and any cover designed to come off, leaving the mattress exposed. If the spot is damp, blot it with a dry towel to lift surface moisture before you apply anything.
Tip. Use a plain white towel so no dye can transfer to the mattress.
Step 3 of 7
Work in mild soap and cold water
Lightly work a small amount of mild soap into a white cloth wrung out in cold water, then apply it to the spot. Blot as you go, lifting the stain onto the cloth, and switch to a clean section of cloth often.
Careful. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.
Step 4 of 7
Use enzyme cleaner on biological marks
If the stain looks biological, such as blood or urine, use an enzyme cleaner or liquid laundry detergent, applied sparingly. For rust or tannin marks, skip this step and stay with the cold-water blotting.
Step 5 of 7
Rinse urine spots with vinegar
For urine, sponge the spot with a mild detergent solution first, then rinse it with a vinegar solution. Blot the rinse up with a dry towel before you move on.
Step 6 of 724 to 48 hours
Let the mattress dry fully
Let the spot air dry completely, starting in the morning so it has the whole day. Water-damaged items should be dry within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Step 7 of 7
Lift any lingering odor
If a smell remains once the spot is dry, sprinkle baking soda over the area and leave it for 20 minutes to an hour, or up to five hours for a strong odor. Vacuum it up afterward.

Best products for brown stains on mattress
Pick an enzyme cleaner or a liquid laundry detergent for biological marks, and plain white vinegar for the urine rinse. Keep a mild liquid soap on hand for the cold-water step, since it does most of the work on everyday brown marks.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on mattress, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light before using any heat. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
Heavy buildup usually takes more than one round.
Heavy or long-standing buildup →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
You'll know it's working when the cloth picks up brown as you blot and the patch looks lighter once it's fully dry. Check it in daylight with the bedding off, and hold off judging until it's dry all the way through. If it looks the same after two rounds, go to the section on marks that have dried in.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your mattress
Brown on the mattress
A brown mark you can see on the surface usually responds best to light blotting. If it came from water with iron in it, the same gentle method applies, but you will need patience rather than extra soap.
Keep the soap amount small and work in short passes so you can see the progress. If it is still visible once dry, repeat the cold-water blotting once more instead of trying something stronger.
Big or large brown on a mattress
A big brown area has to be worked in sections, one patch at a time, so the mattress never gets soaked across its whole surface. Start at the outer edge and work inward so the mark does not spread.
Blot each section with a clean white cloth and move on once it has lifted. Give the whole mattress time to dry, and expect the odor step to take longer if the area was large.
Heavy or long-standing buildup
A brown mark that has dried for weeks is harder, because the tannins or rust have had time to bond with the fibers. Start over with the same light cold-water blotting and mild soap, and give the spot time to dry before you judge the result.
If the spot has already been through a dryer, expect less progress, since the heat has done some of the setting. Repeat the vinegar rinse only if the mark came from urine.
If it is still visible after a couple of rounds, accept that it may not clear completely. Lighter is a realistic result for old marks, and severe scorch will not come out at all.

Do home remedies work on brown stains on mattress?
Plenty of home remedies float around for brown marks, but most were built for other stains or fabrics. Below is how each one fits a mattress, and why the ones that did not make the steps stay out.

Chemical safety
Never mix these
Some products in this guide react dangerously with each other. Use them one at a time and rinse with water in between.
Enzyme cleaner + Vinegar
Some enzyme and pet stain removers' makers say not to mix them with vinegar or acidic cleaners, or with other household chemicals.
If they mix by accident: Don't use the mixture; ventilate the room and avoid breathing fumes or touching it; call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for disposal advice or if anyone feels unwell.
What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't guess the cause
Using a cleaner before you know whether the mark is rust, tannin or biological can make it worse. Look at where the spot sits and how it appeared, then pick the step that fits.
Don't use a dryer or iron
Heat can lock the brown further into the fabric and make it harder to lift. Let the spot air dry instead, even if it takes longer.
Don't skip the hidden-spot test
Every cleaner, even plain mild soap, should be tried on a hidden part of the mattress first. Wait until that patch is fully dry before you judge it, because wet fabric looks darker than it will end up. Don't move on until you've seen how the material reacts.
Don't let a wet spot sit for days
Water-damaged items should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Start the cleaning the same day you spot the mark, so the spot has the full drying window. Waiting until the weekend to deal with it gives mildew the upper hand.
Don't mix bleach with vinegar
Chlorine bleach should never be combined with vinegar, ammonia or other acids, so don't switch between them on the same patch. Rinse the area with clear water before you try a different product. Keep to one cleaner at a time from the steps.
When to call a professional
Bring in an upholstery cleaner when the brown is still visible after the steps and the set-in notes, since a mark that has soaked deep needs more than a cloth. If water has flooded the mattress and it was contaminated, or mold covers more than 10 square feet, a professional with that kind of damage experience is the right call. When you call, say the stain is brown, roughly how old it is, and which products you've already used.
Questions
What causes brown stains on a mattress?
Most are rust or iron from water, tannins from coffee, tea, fruit or wood, scorch, nicotine, or water stains that bled through. Sugary or fruit spills that dried out of sight can also oxidize and turn brown later. Working out which cause you have decides the treatment.
How do I tell which brown mark I have?
They are a color rather than a single substance, so the brown could come from several causes. Check where the mark sits and how it appeared, since that tells you which one you are dealing with. A spot that showed up after a spill points one way, while a faint mark that darkened later often means a sugary spill that dried out of sight.
Can a brown stain on a mattress be permanent?
Some can be. Severe scorch cannot be removed, and rust that bleach has set may stay visible. Most other brown marks lighten with gentle cleaning, though a faint shadow can remain.
Is white vinegar safe on a brown mattress stain?
Only for urine spots, as the rinse in that step. Use plain white vinegar, because colored vinegar can leave its own stain.
What if the brown stain is still there after cleaning?
Let it dry fully first, since a damp mark always looks darker than it will. If it is still visible after one full round, a second light pass with the same method is reasonable. Beyond that, the stain may be set in, and the set-in section explains what is realistic.
How long before I can put the bedding back on?
Wait until the patch is dry through to the middle, which on a thick mattress can take a while. Begin in the morning so it has the whole day, and remember that anything that got wet needs drying inside 24 to 48 hours, or mildew can take hold. Putting sheets on a patch that's still damp traps moisture against the mattress.
How do I get a smell out once the spot is dry?
Baking soda handles most of it. Once the patch is dry, leave a light layer on for anywhere from twenty minutes up to five hours, depending on how strong the smell is, then vacuum it off. A urine spot can sit for a full day before you vacuum, which gives the powder more time to work.
Can I take the mattress cover off and wash it?
Only if the maker designed it to come off, and the tag or the maker's site will tell you which. Forcing off a cover that isn't built for it can damage the mattress underneath, and some makers say doing so cancels the warranty.
How do I keep spills from staining the mattress again?
A washable mattress protector is the simplest defense, because it catches a spill before the mattress itself gets it. Keep it on at all times, and wash it according to its label whenever it's soiled. A protector can't lift a stain that has already soaked in, so act quickly after any spill.
