About TheStainExpert.com

Last updated November 6, 2026

TheStainExpert.com exists for the moment you are standing over a fresh stain and need to know exactly what to do, without making it worse.

Most stain advice treats every surface the same. It isn't. The peroxide that lifts blood from a cotton sheet can bleach a wool rug; the rubbing alcohol that clears ink from polyester can cloud a lacquered table. Most damage happens when a method that suits one material is used on another. So every guide here covers one stain on one material, and starts with what that material can and cannot take.

What you'll find here

How we research a guide

Every method is built from published guidance by the people who know the material best, in this order:

  1. University extension services and textile-care programs.
  2. Industry bodies for carpet, cleaning products and fabric care.
  3. The makers of the material or product involved: care instructions, labels and safety data sheets.

Each step, amount, water temperature and wait time is checked against those sources before a guide is published, and the sources are listed at the bottom of every page so you can read them yourself. Where sources disagree, we follow the more cautious advice and say so. Where a stain is unlikely to come out at home, the guide tells you, and explains when a professional cleaner is the better call.

The full process is on our editorial standards page.

Safety comes first

No guide on this site combines products that react with each other. Any page that uses more than one cleaner says what must never be mixed and to rinse between products. We have a full guide to cleaning products you should never mix, with what to do if it has already happened.

Independent and reader-funded

TheStainExpert.com is independent. No brand pays to appear in a guide or a product list, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage. The site is funded by affiliate commissions: when you buy through some of our links, we may earn a small fee at no extra cost to you. That never decides which method a guide recommends. See our affiliate disclosure for details.
