Our guides are carefully researched, but every item and every stain is different. Please read this before you start.

General information, not professional advice

The guides on TheStainExpert.com are general information. They are not a substitute for advice from a professional cleaner, restorer, conservator or the maker of your item. For valuable, antique, heirloom or delicate items, and anything labeled "dry clean only" or "professional clean only", a professional is the safest choice.

Always test first

Materials, dyes and finishes vary between makers. Test any method on a hidden spot first, follow the care label on the item and the label on any product, and stop if you see color change, damage or a reaction.

Chemical safety

Never mix cleaning products unless the label says to. Chlorine bleach must never be mixed with ammonia, vinegar or other acids, or rubbing alcohol. Use products in a ventilated area, wear gloves where directed and keep them away from children and pets. If someone swallows a cleaning product or breathes in fumes, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or 911.

Health and pests

Guides that touch on mold, bodily fluids, pests or odors deal with cleaning only. Large mold growth, sewage, biohazards and infestations need a qualified professional, and health concerns need a doctor.

No guarantee of results

Old, set-in or heat-set stains may not come out completely, and some damage can't be reversed. We can't guarantee results or accept liability for damage to items, injury or loss arising from use of our guides, to the extent the law allows.
