Prep first
Before you start
- Check whether the mark is a hard orange stain or a slimy pink film before you choose anything.
- Don't put chlorine bleach on an orange or reddish-brown mark until you know it isn't rust, since bleach sets rust.
- Keep the floor damp, not wet, while you work.
Pink and red marks on a bathroom floor usually mean slime, while an orange or reddish-brown one is usually rust from water or metal. Those two need different handling, and the floor material changes which products are safe to use. Pink slime tends to return, so expect to scrub it more than once.
A pink stain on vinyl floor usually needs a mild cleaner and a bit more scrubbing rather than a stronger product. For an orange stain on tile, a rust remover made for hard surfaces is the next step if a plain wipe fails. If a red stain on linoleum floor won't budge after a couple of tries, call a flooring pro rather than scrubbing the finish off.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Check the color and floor
Look at the mark before you wet anything: a hard orange to reddish-brown stain is usually rust, while a slimy pink-red film in a bathroom is usually bacteria. Both start with the same wipe, and the rust remover is only for a mark that stays.
Note whether the floor is vinyl, linoleum, hardwood or tile. For bare hardwood, keep any water to a barely damp cloth and ask a flooring professional before going further.
Step 2 of 6
Wipe with warm, sudsy water
Dip a soft cloth or sponge in warm, sudsy water and wring it out well. Wipe the mark until the color lifts, working from the edge toward the center so the stain doesn't spread.
Tip. Keep the cloth damp, not dripping.
Step 3 of 6
Rinse and dry the spot
Rinse the spot with clean water and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. If the color has lifted, you're done, and if any of it remains, keep going.
Step 4 of 6
Test the rust remover first
Rust removers are strong acids, so pick a hidden spot and test before you go near the stain. Apply a little, wait the time the label gives, and check the floor for any change in color or finish.
Step 5 of 6
Apply the rust remover
If the mark is still there, apply a rust remover labeled safe for resilient floors, following the label for how long it stays on. On ceramic tile, use a remover only if its label names tile, and if the mark has set, go to the poultice in the set-in section.
Careful. Keep rust remover off porcelain and enamel finishes, which it can ruin.
Step 6 of 6
Finish with a full rinse
Rinse the area thoroughly so no remover is left on the floor, then wipe it dry. Look at it once it's dry: if the color is still there, the set-in section covers stronger options.

Best products for orange on laminate & vinyl floors
Use a clean microfiber cloth for each wipe and for drying. Read the label of any product before you use it, and skip one that doesn't name laminate or vinyl as the floor it's for.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on laminate & vinyl floors, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
Heavy buildup usually takes more than one round.
Heavy or long-standing buildup →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Each wipe should pull a bit more color onto the cloth, and on tile the grout lines should lighten along with the surface. A cloudy patch after drying means residue is left behind, so rinse it with clear water and dry it again. If two rounds leave the color exactly where it was, the mark has likely set and needs the older-stain approach.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your laminate & vinyl floors
Orange on tile, vinyl, and linoleum
Orange to reddish-brown marks on these floors are usually rust, so the warm, sudsy wipe and the rust remover are the two steps that matter. On tile, a mark that survives the remover has usually set, and that's when the oxalic acid poultice in the set-in section comes in.
On vinyl and linoleum, follow the time on the remover's label and don't let it sit longer. If you're unsure whether a mark is rust, stop at the wipe and check it once the floor is dry.
Pink on vinyl
Pink-red slime in a bathroom is usually bacteria, and it returns after cleaning, so the warm, sudsy wipe is a start rather than a one-time fix. Vinyl can take the same wipe and a rust remover labeled for resilient floors if the film stays.
Keep the wipe damp and dry the spot well afterward. Bleach is allowed on vinyl in some cases, but without a known safe dilution, leave it out and stick to the wipe and the remover.
Pink on linoleum
Pink marks on linoleum follow the same first wipe, using warm, sudsy water on a damp cloth, since linoleum does not take a flood of water. If the pink film stays, the rust remover labeled for resilient floors is the next step, applied per its label.
Afterward, don't put furniture polish or silicone products on the spot, and don't mix cleaning chemicals unless the maker specifies it.
Red on hardwood
Wet cleaning suits vinyl, linoleum and tile, so on bare wood keep water to a barely damp cloth. Ask a flooring professional before anything wet touches a red mark on hardwood.
If you want to test something in the meantime, use a barely damp cloth on a hidden spot and stop at the first sign the finish changes.
Heavy or long-standing buildup
An old mark that has been sitting for a long time is harder, and the wipe alone may not lift it. On ceramic tile, rust that has set can take the oxalic acid poultice: dissolve oxalic acid crystals in lukewarm water, mix in enough whiting or talcum powder to make a soft paste, and spread it over the mark.
Let the poultice dry completely before you remove it, then rinse the tile thoroughly and polish it. On vinyl or linoleum, give the remover one more round only if its label allows it, and don't scrub harder to make up the difference.
A mark that has set deep can fade without disappearing, and a lighter result is a realistic goal. If it's still clearly there after both rounds, stop and get it looked at rather than trying stronger products.

Do home remedies work on orange on laminate & vinyl floors?
These are the household remedies people reach for on floor rust and pink marks. Only a rust remover labeled safe for resilient floors is worth trying; the rest don't suit the floor or the stain.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't mix bleach with acid cleaners
Bleach mixed with acidic rust or toilet cleaners, vinegar or lemon juice releases chlorine gas. Keep bleach and any acid cleaner apart, even on separate rags, and rinse the floor completely between products.
Don't handle oxalic acid bare-handed
Oxalic acid is poisonous and should never touch your skin, and rust removers call for the same care. Wear rubber gloves for both, every time.
Don't use alcohol on the wall base
Alcohol and mineral spirits aren't safe on coordinating wall base or quarter round. Keep your solvent cloths and any remover on the floor itself, away from the baseboards.
Don't use bleach on the rust
Bleach doesn't lift rust from a floor. It sets the iron deeper and intensifies the color, so a rust spot ends up darker and harder to treat.
Don't use a wire brush on the grout
Metal brushes can scratch the grout and leave rusting particles behind in the lines. Stick with warm, sudsy water and a soft cloth instead.
Don't let rust remover touch porcelain
Commercial rust removers can ruin porcelain or enamel finishes, so keep the product on the mark and off the glaze around it. Work on one small patch at a time so drips don't spread.
When to call a professional
Call a flooring professional if the stain survives a rust remover or the damage goes beyond the surface itself. When you call, name the floor type and say whether the mark is pink slime or orange rust, since that changes the approach.
Questions
Is the orange mark on my tile rust?
Probably, if it's orange to reddish-brown and it came from water or a rusting metal part nearby. Start with the warm, sudsy wipe, and if it stays on tile, the mark has likely set, so the oxalic acid poultice in the set-in section is the next step.
Why does the pink slime in my bathroom come back?
The pink-red slime is usually the bacterium Serratia marcescens, and it returns after cleaning. One wipe won't end it, so repeat the warm, sudsy wipe whenever it shows up.
Can I use vinegar on the pink stain instead?
No. Vinegar is one of the cleaners to keep off cement grout and natural stone such as marble. Stick to the warm, sudsy wipe and, if needed, a rust remover labeled for resilient floors.
Can I use a rust remover on bathroom tile?
Only if its label names tile as a safe surface. If the mark has already set, the oxalic acid poultice in the set-in section is the stronger option to try.
What should I do about a red stain on hardwood?
Ask a flooring professional before anything wet touches the mark, since wet cleaning suits vinyl, linoleum and tile, not wood.
Can I use bleach on a pink stain on vinyl?
Only as a spot treatment, with a diluted solution of one part bleach to ten parts water, and only on vinyl. Skip it on laminate, and never use it on rust, because bleach sets iron deeper. Rinse the spot with clean water afterward so the solution doesn't sit on the floor.
Can a rubber-backed mat stain my floor?
Yes. The backing on rubber and latex mats contains an antioxidant that can leave a permanent stain on vinyl and linoleum. Choose mats with a different backing, and lift the mat now and then to check the floor underneath.
Can I use rubbing alcohol on laminate?
Yes. Dab it onto a cloth first, then use it on marks such as marker, crayon, lipstick, shoe polish or nail polish.
It isn't a rust remover, so use it for those marks and keep it off the wall base and quarter round. Wipe the spot dry right away.
