First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Pick off large pieces of putty by hand first.
- Scrape gently with a plastic card; dried putty can often be pulled off.
- Test any solvent on a hidden spot first.
Putty on glass can look impossible to lift, but softened putty often comes away in one piece instead of smearing. Glass handles warm water and dish soap well, and the work goes best when the heat stays gentle. A softening solvent is only a last resort for leftover residue, and it should be used very sparingly.
Scraping with a metal blade is the quickest way to crack the glass, so use a plastic scraper and keep the angle low. If you're trying to remove old putty from windows, soak it under a warm, damp towel for a few minutes before you lift. When you're working on window glazing putty without breaking glass, stop the moment the pane starts to flex.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Dampen the paper towels
Wet a few paper towels with warm water and squeeze them until they're damp, not dripping. Apply liquid dish soap to one of the towels so it's ready for the putty.
Careful. Keep the water warm, not hot, because sudden temperature changes can break glass.
Step 2 of 6
Lift the putty with the soapy towel
Work the soapy towel over the stain in a circular motion until most of the putty comes away on it. Fold to a clean section of the towel as it fills with putty.
Step 3 of 6
Scrape off the hard residue
Once the soft putty is gone, use a plastic card or spatula to scrape what's left, working at a low angle. Dried putty can often be pulled off in one piece, so lift it rather than digging.
Step 4 of 6
Spray and wipe the film
Spray the residue stain with All Purpose cleaner, then wipe it away with paper towels. Use a fresh towel for each pass so the film doesn't go back onto the glass.
Step 5 of 6
Loosen the last film gently
If a film is still there, rub it with a nylon pad dampened with the dish-soap water. Work in small strokes until the film lifts.
Careful. Glass takes plastic or nylon pads only, so scouring pads and steel wool are out.
Step 6 of 6
Rinse and dry the glass
Wipe the glass with a towel dampened with clean water to remove any soap. Dry it with a clean, dry towel so no soap film is left behind.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on glass, windows & mirrors, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
The glass is clear when the towel comes away without any putty or cloudy film. If you see a film after rinsing, repeat the nylon-pad step with the dish-soap water and rinse again.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your glass, windows & mirrors
Glass tile
Glass tile needs the gentlest handling here. Use only non-abrasive cleansers and plastic or nylon pads, never scouring pads, steel wool or sandpaper.
Test the cleaner on a small spot before you use it across the tile. Then rinse well so no residue is left on the tile.
Glass cookware or ceramicware
Let a hot dish cool before you wipe it with a wet towel. Don't add liquid to a hot dish, and don't set it on a countertop, metal surface or in the sink.
Use the same soapy towel and plastic card. Then dry the dish fully before putting it away.
Mirror
Spray the cleaner onto a towel rather than onto the mirror itself, then wipe the glass. Ammonia- or vinegar-based cleaners can damage the edges and backing, so check the label first.
If the label lists either one, use the dish-soap towel instead of the All Purpose cleaner. Keep the towel damp, not wet, so no liquid runs under the edges.
Window frames
Plastic frames can be damaged by amyl acetate, so keep it off them if you use the set-in option. Lift putty from the frame with a plastic card and the soapy towel, working around the edges of the glass.
Wipe the frame with a damp towel afterward, then dry it so no soap is left in the joints.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Dried putty stays fairly pliable and can often be pulled from glass, so run through the steps once and see what lifts. Don't force a stubborn piece with a blade.
If a thin film is still there, amyl acetate or acetone softens what's left, used very sparingly on a cloth. Keep it off plastic frames.
Wipe the softened putty away with a clean paper towel, then rinse the glass with clean water. If putty is still there after both steps, stop, because forcing it can crack the pane, and a glass repair pro can remove it safely.

Do home remedies work on slime and putty on glass, windows & mirrors?
Most home remedies don't belong in this glass method, which relies on dish soap, a plastic card and a nylon pad. Each remedy is marked as used, optional, or unsafe for glass.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't scrape glass with metal
A metal knife, spoon or other hard object can scratch glass, so keep it out of the scraping. A plastic card or spatula does the job without that risk.
Don't use fluorine cleaners on glass
Fluorine compounds damage glass, ceramic and stone, so check the label before spraying any cleaner. If the label doesn't say, use the dish-soap towel instead.
Don't skip the solvent safety setup
Solvents need good airflow, no open flame nearby, and rubber gloves on your hands. Set all three up before you open the bottle, not after.
When to call a professional
If the glass has cracked, or the putty won't come off after the set-in steps, stop and call a glass repair or glazing professional. Forcing a blade under old putty can crack the pane, and a pro has the tools to remove it without that risk.
Questions
How do I remove window glazing putty without breaking glass?
Use only the soapy towel and a plastic card, since metal can scratch glass. For hardened glazing, use the soapy towel and plastic card, and stop if the glass cracks or the putty won't budge.
Can I use ice to harden the putty before scraping?
No. Skip the ice on glass, since the soapy towel loosens the putty without it.
Once the soft part is gone, dried putty can usually be lifted with a plastic card, so there's no need to harden it first. If a bit won't budge, move to the nylon pad rather than adding cold to the glass.
Can I scrape dried putty off with a razor blade or knife?
No. Use a plastic card or spatula instead, and lift dried putty gently so it comes off in one piece.
Is an abrasive eraser sponge safe on glass?
Leave it out. No, glass takes only non-abrasive cleansers and plastic or nylon pads, so use a nylon pad with dish-soap water.
Does dried putty come off glass in one piece?
Often, yes. Dried putty stays fairly pliable, so a plastic card can usually lift it in one piece. Any bits left behind come off with the soapy towel and the nylon pad.
What if the glass is a mirror?
Spray the cleaner onto a towel rather than onto the mirror. Check that the cleaner has no ammonia or vinegar, since those can damage the edges and backing.
