First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Pick off large wet or dry pieces by hand, and don't rub wet dough into the fabric.
- For putty or modeling clay, chill it with ice cubes in a bag until it firms up.
- Don't scrape the couch with a knife or spoon.
- Test any solvent on a hidden spot first.
A slime stain on a couch is a bigger job than it looks, since the fabric's care code determines which products are safe to use. Silly Putty stays pliable even after it dries and can often be pulled free by hand, while dough has to come out in pieces so it doesn't get pushed into the cushion. Fresh slime is much easier to handle than a blob that has sat in the cushion for days, so act on it quickly.
Lift as much slime as you can with a spoon before any cleaner goes on, so it doesn't soak into the cushion. If you need to remove slime from a couch without vinegar, a mild upholstery cleaner works better than anything harsh. Don't scrub cloth couches hard, because pressing too far can spread the mark into the weave.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Check the cleaning code
Look for the tag under a seat cushion or on the frame before any liquid goes near the stain. W means water-based foam only, S means water-free solvent only, WS means either, and X means no liquid cleaner at all.
If the tag is missing, skip every wet step and use only the dry lifting in the steps below, then call a professional.
Careful. Water on S-coded fabric, or solvent on W-coded fabric, can leave a permanent mark.
Step 2 of 6
Pick off and chill the bulk
Pick off any large clumps by hand, lifting them rather than dragging them along the fabric. For putty or modeling clay, put ice cubes in a plastic bag and press it on the putty until it firms up, then lift the pieces off.
Tip. Dried Silly Putty can often be pulled off in one piece.
Step 3 of 6
Let soft dough dry
If the slime or dough is still soft and wet, leave it to dry rather than wetting it. Let it sit overnight, or at least 4 hours, in room air or with a fan blowing on it, then lift the firm pieces off.
Careful. Heat can set the stain, so use room air or a fan, never a heater or dryer.
Step 4 of 6
Work in the dish-soap foam
On W or WS fabric, add a small squirt of liquid dish soap to cold water and whip it into a light foam. Dab only the foam onto the stain with a clean white cloth.
On S-coded fabric, skip the water and use a water-free dry-cleaning solvent on a white cloth, dabbing sparingly so it doesn't reach the backing.
Careful. Don't saturate the fabric, because water can reach the filling. Solvent needs ventilation, no open flame and rubber gloves.
Step 5 of 6
Lift pieces as they loosen
Keep lifting off each piece as it loosens, so nothing gets worked back into the fibers. Work from the outside edge toward the middle so the stain doesn't spread.
Tip. Switch to a clean part of the cloth whenever it picks up color.
Step 6 of 6
Blot and dry the spot
Blot the area with a damp sponge, then blot it dry with a clean white cloth. If a faint shadow is left, repeat the foam or solvent step once and blot again.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on couch & sofa, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Progress looks like the dish-soap foam pulling a thin film of slime onto your cloth, with the spot feeling less sticky after each pass. If it stays tacky once the cushion is fully dry, the slime has set into the weave, and it's time for the old-stain section.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your couch & sofa
Silly Putty
Silly Putty stays pliable even after it dries, so start by chilling it. Put ice cubes in a plastic bag, press it on the putty until it's firm, then lift the pieces off by hand.
Once the bulk is gone, dab any residue with the foam on W or WS fabric, or with the solvent on S fabric. Lift it with your fingers rather than a tool, and test any solvent on a hidden spot first.
Slime on a couch
Fresh slime is soft and sticky, so the first job is to lift off what you can, not wet it. Pick off large pieces by hand and let the rest dry before anything wet touches the fabric.
Dried slime often lifts off in pieces, which is far easier than foam on a sticky mess. After that, the foam handles whatever is left on W or WS fabric.
Cloth couch
On cloth, the tag decides the method, so check it first. If it's X, use no liquid at all and stick to lifting and vacuuming.
Work the foam in with a white cloth, dabbing from the outside toward the center, then blot with a damp sponge and dry it. If a faint mark remains, repeat once before trying anything stronger.
Hardened slime
Hardened slime has to be lifted before any cleaner goes on. Pick off the pieces by hand, and if it's firm, chill the edges with ice in a bag to loosen them.
Once the pieces are gone, use the foam on W or WS fabric to lift the film left behind. If a mark remains after drying, the alcohol option comes next, after a pretest.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Old slime or putty that has been on the couch for days takes longer, so don't expect it gone in one pass. Start with the lifting and foam steps, since the mild options work best before stronger ones.
Dried Silly Putty stays fairly pliable, so it can often be pulled off by hand. If residue stays, dab a little 70% isopropyl or 90% denatured alcohol on a white cloth, with no added color or fragrance, and blot gently. Pretest it first, and skip it on leather or silk.
On S or WS fabric that isn't acetate, triacetate or modacrylic, a small amount of acetone or amyl acetate on a white cloth can soften what's left. Use it sparingly, with ventilation, away from flame and with rubber gloves, and stop if the color changes. If the mark is still there after that, the stain has probably set, so stop and get a professional.

Do home remedies work on slime and putty on couch & sofa?
Most home remedies you'll see for slime and putty are built for food or liquid spills, not for a sticky mess on upholstery. The couch's cleaning tag decides which remedies can be used, and the rest are ruled out for upholstery.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't rub wet dough into the fabric
Rubbing pushes the slime or dough down into the weave, where it dries and is much harder to lift. Pick off the wet part by hand and let the rest dry first.
Don't scrape or use a stiff brush
A knife, spoon or stiff brush can fray the fibers and grind the stain deeper into the weave. Lift the pieces with your fingers and blot with a cloth instead.
Don't spray solvent into the seams
Solvent that runs down the seams can dissolve glue and finishes you can't see from the front. Apply it to a white cloth, work with the windows open, and keep flames and sparks well away.
Don't reach for nail-polish remover first
Acetone can dissolve acetate and triacetate fabric, so check the fiber before anything strong touches the cushion. Test any solvent on a hidden seam first, and skip solvents altogether on W-coded fabric.
When to call a professional
An upholstery cleaner should take over if the slime has worked into several cushions, or if the spot is still tacky after the dish-soap foam rounds. Tell them it's slime or Silly Putty, roughly when it landed, and which products you've put on it.
Questions
Can I remove slime from a couch without vinegar?
Yes, vinegar isn't needed for this stain. Yes, a dish-soap foam does the job, and on couch fabric vinegar is only a few drops in a wet spotter.
Is rubbing alcohol safe on my couch?
Only on cloth, and only after a pretest. Use 70% isopropyl or 90% denatured alcohol with no added color or fragrance on a hidden spot first, and never on leather or silk.
What if the slime has been on the couch for days?
Old slime that has dried can often be lifted off in pieces, so start there. If it has ground into the fabric, repeat the dish-soap foam and blot again, one spot at a time.
Can I use a hair dryer to speed up drying?
No. Heat can set a stain, so let the spot air dry, with a fan on it if you want it faster.
Is Silly Putty harder to get out of a couch than slime?
Usually not, since Silly Putty stays fairly pliable even when it's dried and can often be pulled off. The chilling step makes the difference, because a firm piece lifts cleanly.
Can I use nail-polish remover on a couch?
Only on S or WS fabric that isn't acetate, triacetate or modacrylic, and only after a hidden-spot test. Dab it onto a white cloth so it doesn't reach the backing.
What do I do if I can't find the cleaning code?
Look under the cushion or in the owner's manual before you apply anything wet. If neither shows a code, an upholstery cleaner can test a hidden seam for you, which beats guessing with a product that could shrink the fabric.
Is a steamer okay for lifting slime from a cushion?
Hot steam is a poor choice for this fabric, since W and WS codes can't take it and heat can lock the slime deeper. Stick with cool dish-soap foam and a barely damp cloth, and leave any hot cleaning to a professional who knows the fabric.
Can laundry soap or dishwasher detergent help with a stubborn patch?
No, since both may leave alkaline residue that sets some stains. Reach for an upholstery shampoo or mild dish-soap foam instead, and blot the cleaner back out so none is left in the fabric.
