Prep first
Before you start
- An orange to reddish-brown spot is usually iron, so the water-based steps below are the right place to start.
- Don't reach for chlorine bleach. On an orange or reddish-brown stain it sets and intensifies the rust.
- Blot now rather than later, because a dried stain is much harder to lift.
A red or orange mark on a couch usually comes from iron, picked up from hard water or from a rusting object that touched the fabric. Check the letter on the cleaning tag first, since it tells you which cleaners the fabric can handle, before anything wet goes near the spot. A fresh mark usually lifts in a few gentle rounds, while a stain left to dry may leave a faint tint.
For a big red stain on a couch cushion, lift the cover first if it comes off, so the foam stays dry. On a white couch, use a white cotton cloth so the color can't move back onto the fabric. If dried red won't lift, a fabric-safe rust remover is the next step before you call a pro.

7 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 7
Blot up the spill
Press a paper towel or clean absorbent cloth onto the spill, working from the outside edge toward the middle so the stain doesn't spread. Blot until nothing more comes up, then move on.
Step 2 of 7
Check the cleaning code
Look for the tag under a cushion or on the frame. W or WS means the water steps below are allowed, so pretest the solution on a hidden spot first. If the tag says S or X, or there's no tag, don't wet the fabric; blot only and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Careful. Water on S-coded fabric, or any liquid on X-coded fabric, can cause shrinking, fading or pile distortion.
Step 3 of 7
Sponge with cool water
Sponge the spot with cool, clear water, then blot it with a dry cloth. Keep the water light, so the fabric is only dampened.
Step 4 of 7
Mix the detergent solution
Stir 1/2 teaspoon of white dishwashing detergent into 1 cup of warm water. Dampen a clean cloth with this sudsy water, then wring it out so it's only damp.
Step 5 of 7
Dab in a few drops of vinegar
Add a few drops of white vinegar to the sponge with the sudsy water and dab at the stain. Turn the cloth often and keep a clean section beside the stain, so the color lifts onto clean fabric, and keep going until no more comes off.
Careful. Use white vinegar only; colored vinegar can leave a stain.
Step 6 of 7
Rinse out every trace
When no more stain is coming off, sponge the spot with clear water until every trace of detergent and vinegar is gone. Keep rinsing with clean water until the cloth comes away with no suds.
Step 7 of 7
Blot the spot dry
Blot thoroughly with a dry cloth until the area stops feeling damp. Let it air dry, or use a fan, and keep heat away from it.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on couch & sofa, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
Heavy buildup usually takes more than one round.
Heavy or long-standing buildup →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Each blot should pull a little more orange onto the cloth, and the mark should lighten gradually rather than all at once. Let the cushion dry fully before you judge it, since a damp spot always looks darker. If the cloth stops picking up color and a mark still shows, the stain has set, so switch to the old-stain section.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your couch & sofa
White couch
On a white couch, any color left behind shows much more, so pretest the solution on a hidden spot and wait for it to dry before you judge it. Use only white cloths and sponges, since colored ones can leave dye on the fabric.
Check the spot in good light after drying, and repeat the lifting steps only if color is still visible. Stop as soon as the cloth comes away clean, because overworking a light fabric can leave a visible mark.
Couch cushion
A big stain on a loose cushion needs care to keep water out of the filling, so keep the cloth damp rather than wet and work one section at a time. Blot up the spill first, then move to a clean part of the cloth often so the color doesn't spread across the cover.
A large stain may take two rounds of the lifting steps, with a full rinse and blot between them. If the cover shows a ring or the color starts to run, stop and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Heavy or long-standing buildup
An old orange stain that has been on the couch for weeks is much harder, and one pass of the steps may only lighten it. Repeat the detergent and vinegar steps once more before you move on, rinsing well each time.
If the stain dried before you got to it, it may need the 3% hydrogen peroxide. Pretest it on a hidden spot first, dampen a clean cloth with it, dab gently, then rinse with clear water and blot dry.
If the stain has been through a dryer, heat may have set it, and it may not come out fully. If it's still there after these rounds, a professional upholstery cleaner is the realistic next step.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't rub the stain
Rubbing pushes the color deeper into the fabric and spreads it over a wider area. Blot with a clean cloth and lift, moving to a fresh section each time.
Don't mix vinegar with bleach
Chlorine bleach mixed with vinegar releases chlorine gas, so keep the two apart. Bleach is also the wrong choice for an orange or reddish-brown stain, so keep it off the couch altogether.
Don't skip the hidden-spot test
Every cleaner you might reach for can shift the dye on some fabrics, so test an out-of-sight patch first to check colorfastness. A small test costs you a minute and can save the whole cushion from a new mark.
Don't use full-strength vinegar on cotton or linen
Vinegar on cotton or linen needs to be cut with water, two parts water to one part vinegar. Keep it to a few drops at a time, since the sponge should stay barely damp.
Don't use ammonia on silk or wool
Ammonia damages these fibers, so if your couch is silk or wool, skip the ammonia step and stick to the detergent and vinegar steps. On any other fabric, use it sparingly and rinse out every trace.
When to call a professional
Bring in a specialist if the tag reads X or S, if your patch test bleeds color or shrinks the fabric, or if the mark covers a large area of the piece. Give the cleaner the color, how long it sat, and a list of products already used on it.
Questions
How soon should I clean an orange stain on my couch?
As soon as you can, because the longer it sits, the harder it is to lift. Blot it right away, then go through the steps once you've checked the cleaning code.
Will the stain come out completely?
A fresh stain often lifts fully, but an old one may leave a faint tinge you'll have to live with. Try one more round of the detergent and vinegar steps before you consider a set-in option.
Is vinegar safe on my couch?
Yes, in small amounts, if the cleaning code allows water. Use only a few drops of white vinegar in the sudsy solution, never a soaked cloth.
When should I call a professional?
Call a professional when the stain is large or unusual, when it's still visible after the steps, or when the tag says S or X. Professionals are better equipped for stains that a home method can't clear.
Can I use this method on leather?
No, these steps are for fabric upholstery, and leather needs its own approach. The Leather guide covers it, so check there before you try anything on a leather couch.
What if I can't find the cleaning code?
Don't guess, since the wrong cleaner can damage the fabric or leave a ring worse than the mark. Blot the spill, keep the spot barely damp, and have a professional upholstery cleaner identify the fabric before anything stronger goes on.
Would washing the cushion cover help?
Leave the cover on. Taking it off to launder or dry clean it can cause shrinking and color bleeding, so work on the spot where it sits, one small section at a time.
Is a steamer safe for this orange mark?
Hold off on the steamer. Heat can set an orange mark deeper, and steam is off the table for W and WS fabrics. Keep to blotting with cool water, and call a professional if you want the whole piece deep cleaned.
Why did my spot leave a ring after cleaning?
A ring forms when the spot gets more liquid than the fabric can hold, and the edge dries before the middle does. Next time keep the cloth barely damp and work the spot evenly, and let it dry with a fan on cool air.
