First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Blot with a clean, dry white cloth or white paper towel. Don't rub, because that spreads the ink.
- Act while the ink is fresh, since laundering can set it.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, and stop if color moves.
- Work from the back of the stain onto an absorbent pad so the ink is pushed out of the fabric.
Ink on a chair rarely comes out in one pass, because the finish or fabric soaks it up and the type of ink changes which cleaner works. On a chair, the material matters most: wood, cane and bamboo can take a wipe, while upholstery needs its code checked before any liquid goes near it. A fresh mark often lifts quickly, but permanent ink may only fade.
On a wooden chair, work the ballpoint mark with a cloth lightly dampened, then dry the spot straight away so the finish doesn't go cloudy. Fabric chairs need an upholstery cleaner suited to their material, tested on a hidden seam before you touch the stain. If an ink stain on upholstery is still there after a few rounds, call a professional.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Sort the chair and the ink
Work out what the chair is made of: aluminum, bamboo, cane, vinyl, wicker, wood, or upholstered fabric. Then identify the ink, because felt-tip and India ink need a different method from ballpoint and stamp-pad ink. Red ink on upholstery has its own limit, covered further down.
Tip. If you can't tell whether a chair is upholstered, treat it as upholstered and use only the solvent method, after the cleaning code check.
Step 2 of 6
Wipe felt-tip ink off hard chairs
For felt-tip or India ink on aluminum, bamboo, cane, vinyl or wicker, wipe with a cloth or sponge dipped in warm sudsy water with a few drops of ammonia added. Wipe without rubbing, and keep turning the cloth so the ink doesn't smear. Rinse well with clear water and wipe dry.
Careful. Rinse each product out with plain water before moving to the next one, and never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar or rubbing alcohol, because bleach and ammonia give off toxic fumes.
Step 3 of 6
Clean ballpoint on bamboo or cane
For ballpoint or stamp-pad ink on bamboo or cane, wipe with a cloth dipped in mild, pure soap and water with a few drops of ammonia added. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
Step 4 of 6
Clean ballpoint on wood
For ballpoint or stamp-pad ink on wood, mix dishwashing detergent in water and swish it into a large volume of suds. Dip a cloth into only the foam and gently wipe the stain. Rinse with a clean cloth moistened with clear water.
Step 5 of 6
Blot and finish felt-tip on wood
Felt-tip or India ink on wood has to be blotted right away, before it penetrates the wood. Blot it with a clean white cloth, then clean the surface with cream wax or a damp cloth. Dab and keep turning the cloth rather than rubbing.
Step 6 of 6
Sponge upholstery with solvent cleaner
On upholstered chairs, check the cleaning code first, then use a commercial solvent-based cleaner only on fabric coded S, following the product directions. For ballpoint or stamp-pad ink, keep sponging while ink is still lifting onto the cloth, and for felt-tip or India ink, sponge lightly so the stain doesn't bleed. If the fabric is coded W or X, blot gently and call a professional upholstery cleaner instead.
Tip. Sponge lightly and keep the fabric from getting overwet.
Careful. Solvents are flammable, so work in a well-ventilated room with no flames, pilot lights or sparks nearby.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on chairs & upholstery, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
On upholstery, each blot should pick up some of the ink onto your cloth, and the spot should look lighter every round. On wood, the surface should look clearer after each wipe, and a dull patch that stays put after the wax step means the mark has set in the grain. At that point, switch to the old-stain approach.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your chairs & upholstery
Hard chairs
On wood, cane, bamboo, wicker, vinyl and aluminum, the steps stay the same but the cleaner changes with the ink. Felt-tip and India ink get the ammonia suds, while ballpoint and stamp-pad ink get soap or dishwashing detergent suds, depending on the material.
Wood needs the most care, because felt-tip or India ink sinks in quickly, so blot it at once. Once the spot is clean, dry the surface completely before you judge the result.
Ink on upholstery
On upholstery, the cleaning code decides the method: the solvent step is only for S-coded fabric, and water-based foam is only for W. A fabric coded X takes no liquid cleaner at all, so leave liquids off it and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Ballpoint and felt-tip ink both use the solvent step, but felt-tip needs a lighter touch so it doesn't spread. If ink still shows after that, the set-in option below covers it.
Fabric chairs
A fabric chair is handled as upholstery, so the cleaning code comes first. Only S-coded fabric gets the solvent cleaner, and the rest of the chair should stay dry.
For ballpoint or stamp-pad ink, sponge with the solvent and keep going while ink lifts. For felt-tip or India ink, sponge lightly and keep the stain from bleeding.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Old ink has had time to settle into the fibers, so it usually takes more than one gentle pass. Work the same way each time, blotting and sponging rather than scrubbing.
Once the ink has dried, the solvent step may lift only part of it. Some inks may be impossible to remove, so it's better to stop early than to push harder.
If ballpoint or stamp-pad ink still shows on upholstery after the solvent step, a few drops of butyl alcohol can help. Pretest it on a hidden spot first, then apply the drops to the stain and cover with an absorbent pad moistened with the alcohol. Stop if the color moves, and call a professional upholstery cleaner for anything that remains.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on ink on chairs & upholstery?
Many home remedies come up for ink, but most belong to other stains. Solvent-based cleaner only suits upholstery with an S code, so check the cleaning code before you reach for one.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't work from the middle outward
Starting in the center pushes the ink out toward the edges and makes a bigger stain. Work from the outside edge toward the center, lifting the ink onto a clean cloth as you go.
Don't use the solvent on red ink
Red ink is excluded from the upholstery solvent method, so don't try a home cleaner on it. Blot it gently and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Don't reach for acetone on unknown fabric
Acetone and nail-polish remover dissolve acetate, triacetate and modacrylic fabrics. If you don't know the fiber, skip acetone entirely and use only the methods above.
Don't rub across the grain on wood
Scrubbing against the grain can scratch the finish and push ink deeper into the open pores. Work lightly with the grain, then polish or wax the spot as soon as it's dry.
Don't wait on felt-tip over bare wood
Felt-tip can penetrate wood quickly, so a mark that looks shallow can be deep within minutes. Blot it right away, before the ink reaches the grain, then move on to the cleaning steps.
Don't keep repeating on permanent ink
Permanent ink often resists every step, and extra passes just spread the color wider on the fabric or finish. If the first two rounds lift nothing, stop and reassess the ink type before you try anything stronger.
When to call a professional
A pro is the safer call if the upholstery is coded X or S, if a pretest moves color, or if the stain covers a large area. On a wood or lacquered frame that still shows a mark after the wax step, tell them the finish, the ink type, and which cleaners went on it.
Questions
How do you remove ink from dry-clean-only upholstery?
A dry-clean-only label usually points to an S code, but confirm it on the tag before you apply anything. If the code is S, the solvent method applies, and if the tag says anything else, call a professional upholstery cleaner.
What is the best ink stain remover for upholstery?
There's no single best remover, because ink types need different methods. For upholstery, the right product type is a commercial solvent-based cleaner, and it's only for S-coded fabric.
Can ink leave a permanent mark on wood?
It can, if felt-tip or India ink soaks in before you act. Blot it right away, then clean with cream wax or a damp cloth. Some inks may be impossible to remove, so a faint mark can remain even after careful work.
Can I use a stronger cleaner if the ink is still there?
Not on a chair. Heavy-duty household detergents can set some stains, and chlorine bleach is never used on these chairs. Try the set-in option, then call a professional upholstery cleaner if ink remains.
How do I test an unknown chair fabric before cleaning?
Pick a spot that's out of sight, like under the seat rail or the back of the cushion, and dab a little cleaner on it with a white cloth. Wait several minutes, then check the cloth for color and the fabric for any change in texture or shine. If nothing moves, it's safe to go ahead with the same product.
Should I take the cushion cover off the chair to clean it?
Leave it on. Removing the cover to launder can set the ink further, and it may not go back on the chair evenly, so clean the mark in place with a barely damp cloth or foam.
Can I use a hot or steam cleaner on an upholstered chair?
Not on an ink mark. Heat can set the ink, and steam isn't recommended on W or SW fabric, so stick to cool water and let the spot air-dry or dry with a fan on cool. Hot water and steam can also leave a ring if they push too much moisture into the padding.
