Prep first
Before you start
- Read the cleaning code on the label before you reach for any liquid.
- Dab at the stain instead of rubbing it, and act soon, because yellowing sets over time.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.
- Keep the chair away from a dryer or iron until the yellow is gone.
A white chair picks up yellow when sweat or oil residue soaks into the weave and slowly reacts with the air, often showing up long after any spill. The cleaning code is the deciding factor, since a W fabric takes water-based foam, an S fabric takes a water-free solvent, and an X fabric should only be vacuumed or brushed lightly. Fresh yellow often lifts with a few careful rounds, but old yellowing may only fade, and chlorine bleach on wool, silk or leather causes permanent yellowing.
Brush the upholstery gently first so loose grime comes off before any cleaner goes on. To remove yellow stains from upholstery, work a cleaner matched to your code into the mark with a white cotton cloth. If yellow stains on white furniture won't budge after a few rounds, call a pro.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Check the cleaning code
Check the cleaning code on the label before anything wet touches the chair, because it decides which cleaners are allowed. If the code is X, no foam or liquid cleaner can be used, so vacuum or brush the area lightly and stop there.
Step 2 of 6
Lift solids and blot liquids
Act right away, since a stain left to set can become permanent. Scrape up any solids with the blade of a table knife or a spatula, then blot liquids with a clean, absorbent cloth. Press lightly so that moisture doesn't reach the filling.
Step 3 of 6
Pretest on a hidden spot
Test your cleaner on a hidden area, such as a seam or the back of the chair, before using it on the stain. Watch for color transferring onto the cloth or any change to the surface.
Step 4 of 6
Clean to match the code
On W fabric, use only the foam of a water-based upholstery shampoo or mild detergent. On S fabric, use a mild water-free dry-cleaning solvent, and on WS fabric either one works. Keep the cloth damp and never saturate the fabric.
Careful. Keep solvent away from open flames, pilot lights and sparks.
Step 5 of 6
Work from the outside in
Start at the outside edge of the stain and work toward the center so it doesn't spread outward. Move to a clean part of the cloth as it picks up the stain. Keep the same light touch until the stain stops transferring.
Step 6 of 6
Rinse out residue and dry fast
Remove all the cleaning chemicals, because too much soap leaves a residue that streaks and attracts dirt. Speed drying with a fan or a hair dryer set to cool, which helps prevent rings. Keep air moving around the chair until the fabric is fully dry.
Careful. Don't use an iron or heat dryer until the yellowing is gone, because heat sets stains.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on chairs & upholstery, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
Heavy buildup usually takes more than one round.
Heavy or long-standing buildup →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Each blot should lift a faint yellow onto the cloth, and the spot should look lighter once the fabric dries. If the cloth stays white after several light blots and the yellow is still visible, the residue has probably set, so turn to the set-in section. If the fabric's own color transfers onto the cloth, stop there.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your chairs & upholstery
Cushion covers
Cushion covers should stay on the cushion, because removing them to launder or dry clean is not safe. Treat the stain in place with the steps above, and keep the filling out of the wet part.
Work with the cover on the cushion the whole time, and keep the wet area small so that moisture stays near the surface.
Wool, silk or velvet
Wool and silk take no oxygen-based cleaner and no rubbing alcohol, so stick to the code-matched foam or solvent. Silk and velvet also rule out dish soap, even as a foam.
Because these fibers are delicate, keep the cloth barely damp and work in small areas.
Colored fabric
Colored fabric that isn't colorfast is unsafe with oxygen-based cleaners and with hydrogen peroxide. Rubbing alcohol is also unsafe on colored fabric with untested dyes, so leave it out.
Pretest the cleaner on a hidden spot first, and watch for color moving onto the cloth. If color moves, stop before you start on the stain.
Leather seats
Leather can't take the fabric treatment, so don't use the foam or solvent on it. Rubbing alcohol and oxygen-based cleaners are both unsafe on leather, so keep them away from the seat.
A yellowed leather seat is a different job with different rules. Use the Leather guide for that surface, and keep the steps above for the fabric parts of the chair.
Heavy or long-standing buildup
Old yellowing is the hardest kind, because the residue has had months to react with oxygen and settle into the fabric. A long presoak is not an option on a chair, since moisture must not reach the filling.
If the stain has been dried with heat or ironed, it is set and much harder to shift. The realistic goal is to lighten it rather than erase it completely.
The realistic option is to repeat the cleaning step that matches your code, with fresh foam or solvent and a clean part of the cloth each time. Some yellowing will lighten and some won't, and a stain that stays after careful repeats is the point to call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on yellow stains on chairs & upholstery?
Plenty of home remedies are listed for yellowing, but many are made for other stains or can damage upholstery. Here is where each one stands for chair fabric.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't rub the stain into the weave
Rubbing pushes the residue deeper into the weave and spreads the yellow outward. Blot, and scrape only loose solids, never the stain itself.
Don't reach for a stronger product
Extra-strong products or long soaks can themselves yellow white fabric. Repeat the correct-strength treatment instead, one pass at a time.
Don't wet an X-coded seat
Liquid is off the table for an X-coded chair. Foam or liquid can make the fabric shrink or fade and leave the pile looking flattened, so vacuum and brush lightly instead.
Don't bleach wool, silk or leather
Chlorine bleach yellows these materials permanently, so it turns a fixable mark into a lasting one. Skip it entirely on this kind of seat, even as a test.
Don't dry the seat with heat
Heat is what locks yellow residue in, so a hot hair dryer or a spot baking in the sun works against you. Use a fan or cool air to dry the area instead.
When to call a professional
A professional upholstery cleaner is the better call for S-coded fabric and for any X-coded chair. Mention that the stain is yellow, how long it has been there, and which products you already tried, since that history changes their approach. If your pre-test shows bleeding or shrinking, stop and call one too.
Questions
Why did my white chair turn yellow if nothing was spilled?
Yellowing usually comes from residue of sweat, antiperspirant, body oil or protein that soaked into the fabric over time. Those residues slowly react with oxygen and turn yellow, sometimes months after they got there. So the yellow can appear with no spill you remember.
Will chlorine bleach fix the yellow on my chair?
No, and it can do lasting damage. Chlorine bleach yellows wool, silk, mohair, leather and spandex permanently, and it can set or intensify rust or iron yellowing. No, and it can do lasting damage: chlorine bleach yellows wool, silk, mohair, leather and spandex permanently.
Does old yellowing ever come out completely?
It depends on the cause. Yellowing from residue can improve with careful, correct cleaning, but yellowing from damage, such as chlorine bleach on spandex or a resin finish, is permanent.
Will the yellow come back after I clean it?
It can, if residue is left in the fabric. Rinse away all the cleaner before the chair dries, and keep sweat and body oil off the seat as much as you can.
Can I take the cushion cover off to clean it?
Leave it on. Guidance is not to remove cushion covers to launder or dry clean them, so clean the spot where it sits, using only the product your code allows.
Is a steam cleaner safe on a yellow chair?
Steam isn't a good idea on W or WS fabric, and heat can work the yellow deeper into the fibers. Stick to cool moisture applied with a cloth, and keep the damp area small. A professional can judge whether steam has a place once the simpler methods have been tried.
Why does a ring show up after spot cleaning?
Rings form at the edge of a wet patch, so the fix is to clean the entire area right away rather than just the spot. Blend the damp zone into the surrounding fabric, then let a fan on a cool setting finish the job. Keep the moisture modest next time so a ring doesn't reappear.
