First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Scrape up solids gently with a rounded spoon, without pushing them into the fibers.
- Blot liquids with white paper towels or a clean white cloth.
- Work from the edges toward the center.
- Keep your pet off the chair until the spot is dry.
Pet stains on a chair do two jobs: they leave a visible mark, and an odor that can pull your pet back to the same spot. Upholstery is tricky because liquid soaks into the filling as well as the surface, so the tag's code is what tells you which cleaner is safe. Fresh accidents come up far more readily than dried ones, and some older marks only fade over several rounds.
Dog saliva on furniture lifts most easily while it's still fresh, so don't let it sit. For pet stains on upholstery and furniture, match the cleaner to the tag and keep the moisture light. If the mark or smell hangs on after a couple of tries, call a professional instead of soaking the cushion.

7 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 71 minute
Check the cleaning code
Read the cleaning code on the chair's tag before anything wet touches it. W or WS means water-based foam is allowed, S means a water-free dry-cleaning solvent only, and X means no liquid at all. If there's no code or you can't read it, don't guess: skip the wet steps, vacuum the area and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Careful. Water on S-coded fabric, or any liquid on X-coded fabric, can cause shrinking, fading or pile distortion.
Step 2 of 7
Soak up the liquid
Press white paper towels or a clean white cloth onto the spot to soak up as much urine as you can. Switch to fresh towels as the first ones fill, and keep going until little more comes up.
Step 3 of 7
Build a padding stack
Lay a thick layer of paper towels over the wet spot and cover it with a thick layer of newspaper. If you can slide newspaper under the cushion, do that too. Press down on the padding with your full weight for about a minute, then swap in fresh towels and repeat until the area is barely damp.
Step 4 of 7
Move soaked towels to the bathroom spot
Place the urine-soaked paper towels in your pet's designated bathroom area. Keep them there rather than in the room with the chair, so the scent stays where you want it.
Step 5 of 7
Apply foam or solvent
On W or WS fabric, mix 1 teaspoon of mild liquid hand dish soap with 1 cup of warm water, whip it into foam, and dab only the foam onto the spot with a white cloth. On S fabric, dab a water-free dry-cleaning solvent onto a cloth instead, with good ventilation and no flames or sparks nearby. Skip this step entirely on X fabric.
Tip. Test the foam or solvent on a hidden spot first, and stop if the color lifts.
Careful. Don't use solvent on W-coded fabric. Saturating the fabric lets water or detergent reach the filling, which can cause shrinkage or color bleeding.
Step 6 of 7
Rinse and blot dry
On W or WS fabric, rinse the accident zone thoroughly with clean, cool water and blot dry. On S or X fabric, skip the water and blot the spot with a clean white cloth until it's dry.
Step 7 of 7
Finish with an enzyme cleaner
On W or WS fabric, apply an enzymatic pet stain-and-odor cleaner following its label. Let it dry fully, since the odor is what keeps a pet coming back to the same spot.
Careful. Skip this liquid step on S-coded fabric, because it's a liquid cleaner.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on chairs & upholstery, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Progress looks like a spot that lightens a little with every round, while the towel picks up a faint tint from the stain. If the cloth comes up clean and the mark is still visible, the residue has set and needs the dried-in approach. Pause the moment the towel shows the chair's own dye, because that means the fabric is giving up color.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your chairs & upholstery
Dog saliva on upholstery
Dog saliva is a wet mark, so start with the same blotting and cleaning code check as any pet accident. Skip the padding stack unless the spot is soaked through, because that step is for urine.
On W or WS fabric, the foam and rinse steps are enough for most saliva marks. If the spot is still visible once it's dry, test a fresh dab of foam on a hidden spot before going again.
Sphynx cat oil on furniture
Oil from a cat's skin is greasy, so a water rinse alone may leave a dull patch. Start with the blotting, then work the foam into the spot on W or WS fabric to lift the grease before you rinse.
On S fabric, the dry-cleaning solvent is the right tool for oil, used on a cloth with good ventilation. Skip the water rinse and enzyme finish on that fabric, and call a professional if the patch stays after a second try.
Cat marking on upholstery
A cat marking territory leaves urine, the same stain as any pet accident, but often in the same spot again and again. Treat it as an odor job first, because the enzyme finish matters more than the visible mark.
If the chair sits in the cat's marking area, keep the cat away from it while it dries. Repeated marks usually mean the odor was never fully removed, so repeat the whole method rather than just the foam.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Old pet stains are the ones you find by smell rather than sight, and they're harder because the urine has had time to soak deeper. Find them with your nose or a black light in a dark room, then outline each one lightly with chalk so you can see the area.
On W or WS fabric, work an enzymatic cleaner into the spot and the area around it, lightly enough that it doesn't reach the filling. Cover it with a damp towel so it stays moist for 24-48 hours, then uncover it, let it dry and vacuum.
Realistically, an old stain may fade a lot without disappearing completely, especially if urine soaked into the padding underneath. If it's still visible after the 24-48 hours, a professional upholstery cleaner is the next step.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on pet stains on chairs & upholstery?
Home remedies for pet stains come up a lot, and most of them don't belong on a chair. Most of these don't suit a chair, since the cleaning code decides what fabric can take.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't use ammonia or vinegar
Ammonia smells like urine, so it can draw your pet back to the same spot. Vinegar's strong odor can encourage the same marking, so it stays out of this job too.
Don't use bleach on fresh urine
Urine contains ammonia compounds, and mixing them with chlorine bleach can produce hazardous gases. Bleach doesn't remove urine odor anyway, so it adds risk without fixing the problem.
Don't rub the spot
Rubbing spreads the wet area and works the urine deeper into the fibers. Press and lift with clean towels instead.
Don't skip the newspaper underneath
Urine that gets through the top layer can travel down to whatever sits beneath the chair, so slide newspaper under the soiled area before you start. Keep building the padding stack until the spot is barely damp, then carry the soaked towels to your pet's bathroom area so the scent lands where you want it.
Don't dry the chair with direct heat
Heat can bond the protein from urine into man-made fibers, which locks in both the mark and the smell. Let the spot air-dry in a room with a window open, and check it again only once the fabric is fully dry.
When to call a professional
Call a professional upholstery cleaner if the tag reads X or S, since those codes rule out most home products. If a test patch shows dye bleeding, or the smell is still there after your rounds, book them and mention the pet urine, how long it sat, and any products already used.
Questions
What does Reddit say about cleaning pet stains from furniture?
Online advice ranges from home mixes to harsh cleaners, and those can set the stain or leave a smell that draws your pet back. Stick to the steps here: check the code, blot, and finish with an enzymatic cleaner on W or WS fabric.
Are furniture stain removers safe for kids and pets?
Only if the label fits the chair's cleaning code and you use it as directed. Solvents need good ventilation and no open flame, sparks or pilot lights nearby, so keep kids and pets out of the room until the chair is dry.
Why does my chair still smell after it's dry?
The odor is urine that stayed in the fibers and padding. On W or WS fabric, repeat the enzymatic finish over the whole area, not just the visible spot, until the smell is gone.
How soon can my pet use the chair again?
Once the chair is completely dry and has no smell or damp feel. Keep your pet off it until the fabric has dried all the way through, because a damp spot is what keeps the odor going.
What if the stain is still there after one round?
Repeat the padding and foam steps on the same spot. If it's still visible once it's dry, treat it as set in and use the old-stain method.
How fast do I need to clean up after the accident?
As fast as you can. Odor comes from bacteria working while the spot stays damp, so blotting right away gives you the best chance.
What if the chair has no cleaning code?
Without a code you're guessing at which cleaner the fabric can take, and a wrong guess can shrink or stain it. Blot the urine with white cloth and keep the spot as dry as you can. Then ask an upholstery professional to identify the fabric before anything wet goes on it.
Can I take the seat cover off and wash it?
No, removing the cover to launder or dry clean it isn't recommended, even for urine. Work the spot in place with the padding stack under it so the liquid stays in one area. If the cover looks too far gone to save, a professional can tell you whether it's worth cleaning off the frame.
Do I need to rinse off the enzyme cleaner?
Follow the label on the enzyme cleaner first, since that sets how long it should sit. After that, rinse with cool water and blot the area dry. Skipping the rinse can leave residue in the fibers, so don't leave it out.
