First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Keep the sheet flat and dry while you work.
- Test on a hidden spot before you start.
- Brush loose debris off before you erase.
- Stop if the ink starts to smear.
Highlighter on paper is felt-tip dye that has soaked into the fibers, and it's one of those marks that can't simply be washed out at home. Paper can't take water, solvent, or heat, so this has to be a dry job from start to finish. Expect a lighter mark rather than a fully clean page, and stop as soon as the ink stops lifting.
Removing highlighter from paper without damaging it starts with keeping every step dry, so skip anything that adds moisture. Slide a clean sheet under the page so the ink can't bleed onto the next one. If the sheet is valuable or the mark has set, call a conservator rather than rubbing harder.

7 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 7
Decide whether to treat it
Start by asking whether the paper is worth the risk. If it is valuable, already damaged, or handled often, a paper conservator should make the call instead of you. For ordinary paper, the dry steps below are the only ones to try at home.
Careful. Don't brush or erase brittle paper, flaking ink, or hand-colored items.
Step 2 of 7
Let damp paper air dry
If the sheet is wet, spread it out flat to air dry right away. If it can't air dry within two days, freeze it instead. Skip this step entirely if the paper is already dry.
Step 3 of 7
Handle the sheet with clean hands
Wash your hands or put on clean nitrile gloves before you touch the sheet. Hold it by the edges so your fingers stay off the marked area. Lay it on a clean, flat surface so it doesn't slide or bend while you work.
Step 4 of 7
Test a hidden spot first
Choose a small, unobtrusive spot, such as a margin or the blank edge of the page. Brush that spot first, then watch for smearing or lifting of the ink or any nearby graphite. If the ink moves, stop and call a conservator instead of going on.
Step 5 of 7
Brush off loose debris
Use a clean, soft natural-bristle brush and work from the inside of the sheet toward the edges. Short, light strokes lift dust and grit without pushing it into the fibers. Stop brushing if any ink starts to smear.
Tip. Brush over a clean sheet of paper so the debris doesn't land back on the page.
Step 6 of 7
Erase lightly with vinyl crumbs
Grate a non-colored vinyl eraser into fine crumbs, then rub them over the highlighter in short, random strokes. Brush the crumbs away every few strokes so they don't grind into the paper. Keep the passes light and expect the job to take several rounds rather than one hard pass.
Tip. Work a small area at a time and check it under good light before the next pass.
Careful. Don't use a block, putty, electric, or commercial abrasive eraser on this paper.
Step 7 of 7
Stop when surface cleaning ends
Surface cleaning won't remove heavy soiling or staining that has become embedded, such as tide lines, mold stains, or mat burn. If a faint mark is still visible after several light rounds, the ink has likely set into the fibers.
Accept the result at that point rather than moving on to water or solvent. If the stain is mold, keep the room between 40-65% humidity so the mold does not regrow.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
You're making progress when the highlighter lightens and the crumbs take on its color. Stop if the ink starts to smear, the paper fuzzes, or the mark spreads outward instead of lifting.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your paper, books & photos
Book pages
Highlighter inside a book follows the same dry steps, with one big change: don't use eraser crumbs inside the book. They get trapped in the gutter and grind into the binding, so stick to the soft brush and test first. Open the book flat on a clean, firm surface and brush gently from the inside toward the edges.
If the marks run across several pages, work one page at a time and check each one for smearing. Any mark that is still visible after the brush is the point to stop, not to try a stronger treatment.
Pink, yellow, and green highlighter
Pink, yellow, and green highlighter are all felt-tip inks, so the steps stay the same whatever the color. Start with the brush, then the crumbs, and check the test spot before each new round.
If one color lifts while another does not, slow down and keep the passes lighter rather than pressing harder. Stop at the same point you would for any highlighter, when the ink no longer lifts.
Photographs
Highlighter on a photograph is not something to erase at home. Only loose dust comes off, and it comes off with an air-bulb blower, never canned air. Hold the print by its edges or wear clean nitrile gloves, and keep your fingers off the image.
If the highlighter is on the image itself, take the print to a photograph conservator instead of trying anything at home. A photograph conservator can judge what the print can take.
Mold stains
Mold is a different job from highlighter, and the brush can make it worse. Do not attempt to remove active mold yourself, since it may only spread or smear across the page.
Mold stains that remain after drying are a conservator's call, not a home job. Set the sheet aside in a cool, relatively dry place until you have one to look at it.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Old highlighter that has sat for years is harder to lift than fresh ink, so expect a slower job. Work in light passes and check the paper between them.
Once the ink has dried into the fibers, the brush and crumbs can only lift the top layer. Heat is not a fix either, so keep the sheet away from heat sources and don't try warming it to loosen the ink.
Some faint color often stays, and that is a realistic result for home cleaning on paper. If the mark is still clear after gentle passes, stop and ask a paper conservator, since they can judge what is safe for the item.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on highlighter on paper, books & photos?
Most kitchen remedies are water-based, which is why many of them are off the table for paper. Water, solvents and heat are off limits on paper, so anything wet or harsh is a skip. For this stain, the dry steps above do the work.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't use tape or sticky notes
Self-stick tape, even when it is marketed as archival, can be extremely difficult to remove. Sticky notes and glue leave residue on the paper too. Keep every adhesive away from the sheet while you work.
Don't add water to the paper
Paper can't take any water at home, so a damp cloth or a drop of lemon juice can spread the dye and weaken the sheet. A wet spot can also leave a ring that looks worse than the highlighter. Stick to the dry steps even when a wet spot looks tempting.
Don't rub hard
Pressing down drives the ink deeper into the fibers and can tear thin paper. Light, short strokes lift more with less risk. If you feel resistance, ease off rather than pushing harder.
Don't store the paper near heat
Radiators and vents dry paper out and make it harder to handle. Keep the sheet in a cool, relatively dry place while you work and afterward.
When to call a professional
A paper conservator is the right call when the item is valuable, already damaged, handled often, or has embedded stains, tape residue, or insect or rust deposits. A conservator can also tell you when to stop, which is worth more than any remover. Look for one through a professional conservation directory.
Questions
How do you erase highlighter from paper?
You can lighten it a lot, but a complete erase isn't always possible. Brush away loose debris, then use grated, non-colored vinyl eraser crumbs in short, random strokes. Expect a faint mark to stay if the ink has soaked in.
How do you remove highlighter from paper without damaging it?
Keep the method dry and light, and test a hidden spot before you start. Water, solvents, and heat are what usually damage paper, so the soft brush and vinyl crumbs are the safest tools. Stop as soon as the ink smears or the paper starts to lift.
Does the color of the highlighter change how you remove it?
No. Pink, yellow, and green highlighters are all felt-tip inks, so the same dry steps work for each. Lemon juice doesn't become a safer choice for one color, because it still needs water, which paper can't take.
How long can I wait before treating highlighter on paper?
Treat it as soon as you can. Fresh ink is easier to lift than ink that has sat for years, so the sooner you start the better your chances.
Can I speed up drying with a hair dryer?
No. Heat is hard on paper and can warp it, so let damp paper air dry at room temperature instead. Keep it away from radiators and vents while it dries.
When should I stop and get help?
Stop when the ink smears, the paper softens or lifts, or a mark stays after several gentle rounds. Those signs mean the ink is set or the paper is at risk. A paper conservator can judge what is safe for the item.
