First few minutes
Just happened? Do this first
- Scrape off the excess with a spoon or dull knife, then blot. Don't rub.
- Rinse or sponge with cool water first. Warm or hot water can set the protein.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden spot before you use it on the stain.
- Keep heat off the spot until it's clean, including heaters and hair dryers.
Yogurt and cheese on a couch are an oily film with milk protein tangled in it, and the protein is what sets when warm water reaches it. Fresh spots are the easy case, but once yogurt has dried, expect to fade it over several gentle rounds rather than erase it in one pass. The cleaning code on the tag decides which products can touch your fabric, so find that before any liquid goes on.
Getting yogurt stain out of a couch starts with the gentlest cleaner your tag allows, and dabbing rather than rubbing. Test a hidden spot first, since the wrong product can leave a ring on upholstery. If a faint mark remains after two or three rounds, a professional upholstery cleaner can take over.

6 steps
Step by step
Step 1 of 6
Scrape off the excess
Lift off as much cheese or yogurt as you can with a spoon or dull knife, working from the outside edge inward. Then blot what's left with a dry white cloth, pressing down rather than rubbing. Rubbing spreads the mark and pushes it deeper into the weave.
Step 2 of 6
Check the cleaning code
Look for the tag under a seat cushion or on the frame. W means water-based cleaners only, S means water-free solvent only, WS means either, and X means no liquid cleaner at all. If it's X, or there's no tag, stop here: vacuum gently and call a professional upholstery cleaner.
Careful. Water on S-coded fabric, or solvent on W-coded fabric, can leave a permanent mark.
Step 3 of 6
Lift the grease with solvent
On S or WS fabric only, dampen a clean white cloth with commercial dry-cleaning solvent and dab the greasy film from the outside in. Switch to a clean section as the cloth picks up the stain, and stop when it comes up clean.
Use the solvent straight from the can, never mixed with oil at an 8 to 1 ratio or any other blend. Blot thoroughly and let the spot dry before going on.
Careful. Dry-cleaning solvent is flammable; keep it away from open flames, pilot lights and sparks.
Step 4 of 6
Lift the rest with the soap mix
On W or WS fabric only, stir 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap into 1 cup of cool water. Using a medicine dropper or small syringe, put a few drops directly onto the stain and blot with a clean cloth. Add drops only as the cloth picks up the mark, so the fabric stays damp rather than wet.
Tip. Keep a dry cloth ready to take up extra moisture between drops.
Step 5 of 6
Rinse out the soap
After the soap step, dampen a clean pad with cool water, not warm, and sponge over the area to lift out the soap. Blot well with a dry cloth so the spot doesn't stay wet.
Step 6 of 6
Let the spot dry fully
Let the area air-dry with a window open, or set a fan on it, and keep heaters and hair dryers away. Don't press on it while it dries, and keep the cushion off until the spot is dry to the touch.
Tip. Check the spot in daylight once it's dry; if a faint mark is left, see the set-in section below.

How we picked these: each product is made for this type of stain, its maker doesn't warn against using it on couch & sofa, and its directions fit the steps above.
Finished the steps? How does it look?
Nice work. Let it dry completely and check it again in good light. Here is what done looks like:
How to tell it's really gone →A faint mark usually needs one more round, not a stronger product.
If the stain was already dried or set, the method changes.
Old, dried or set-in stains →When to call a professional →How to tell it's working
Each blot should pick up less color than the one before, and the cloth should stop looking greasy as you move through the spot. A spot that dries with a lighter outline or a stiff patch has picked up too much liquid, so dampen the whole panel evenly and dry it fast. If a crust forms or the spot stays tacky after a solvent round, the protein has set, and it's time for the dried-spot section.
What changes for yours
Adjust for your couch & sofa
W-coded couch
On a W couch, skip the solvent entirely, since it can leave a permanent mark on water-only fabric. Work with the soap mix alone and keep the wet area small so it doesn't spread.
Because there's no solvent, the greasy part has to lift with the soap. If the spot still looks dull after one pass, repeat the soap and blot before you move on.
S-coded couch
On an S couch, the soap mix is out, because water can leave a permanent mark. Use only the dry-cleaning solvent on a clean cloth, changing to a clean section as it picks up the stain.
If a faint ring shows once it's dry, don't add water to it. Repeat the solvent on a clean cloth instead and let it dry again.
WS-coded couch
A WS couch takes both cleaners, so work in order: solvent first to lift the grease, then the soap mix for what's left. Let the solvent dry before any water touches the spot.
Use separate cloths for each cleaner, and finish with a cool-water rinse and a dry blot. Don't let solvent and soap sit on the same cloth.
X-coded couch
On an X couch, no liquid goes on the fabric at all, including the soap mix and solvent. Vacuum what you can and leave the stain to a professional upholstery cleaner.
No home remedy is safe on X fabric, because foam or liquid can shrink it, fade it or distort the pile. Don't try the steps above on this couch.
Old, dried or set-in stains
Old yogurt or cheese that has sat for days is harder to lift, because the protein has had time to dry into the fabric. Start with the steps for your cleaning code, and give each cleaner a few minutes to work before you blot.
If the stain has dried to a crust, on W or WS fabric lightly moisten it with cool water and let it soften before you scrape. A commercial enzyme presoak can then be applied to the spot, following the product's directions, and blotted out with a clean cloth. Pretest it first, since it can change the color of some fabric.
Once the spot is dry, check it in daylight. A faint mark that's still there after a full round of cleaning is usually as far as a home cleaning will take it, so stop scrubbing. On S or X fabric, don't add water or an enzyme product; call a professional instead.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide and more
Do home remedies work on cheese on couch & sofa?
Many of these remedies are written for other stains, such as wine. Here's how each one fits, or doesn't, with the steps above.

What makes it worse
Mistakes to avoid
Don't rub the yogurt in
Rubbing spreads the cheese or yogurt into the weave and makes the mark bigger. Blot from the outside edge toward the middle, and lift each spot off the cloth rather than pressing it back in.
Don't reach for bleach
Chlorine bleach isn't safe on couch fabric, and it must never be mixed with ammonia, vinegar or any other cleaner. If you've already used another product, rinse the area thoroughly with cool water before you try anything else.
Don't pour liquid onto an X-coded couch
Foam or liquid cleaners can shrink, fade or distort the pile on X-coded fabric. Vacuum the dried crust and brush it lightly instead of wetting it.
Don't press the cushion back onto a wet spot
Weight on a damp panel pushes the liquid and the protein deeper into the padding, and a ring forms as it dries. Lift the cushions off, prop the spot up, and let the panel dry completely.
When to call a professional
Bring in an upholstery cleaner when the couch is soiled overall, since spot work only moves the mark somewhere new. A dried crust that won't soften after the solvent round is also a reason to call. Mention that it was yogurt, how many days it sat, and which products went on first.
Questions
Why does yogurt set so easily on a couch?
The protein in yogurt sets when it gets warm, so heat from water or a dryer can lock it in. Start with cool water, and keep heat away until the spot is clean.
Can I use vinegar on a yogurt stain on my couch?
You don't need it. No, a mild dish soap mix does the work, and on S or WS fabric a dry-cleaning solvent is used instead. Leave it out and keep your other cleaners separate.
Can I use a hair dryer to dry the spot faster?
No. Heat can set the protein, so keep hair dryers and heaters away from the spot. Air-drying or a fan is the safe way to finish.
What if I have a leather couch?
The steps here are for fabric, so they don't apply to leather. For leather, see our Leather guide, which covers what's safe for that surface.
Should I test the cleaner before using it?
Yes, every time. Put a small amount on a hidden spot, such as under the seat or on the back, and wait for it to dry before you judge the result.
What should I do if the spot is still there after one round?
Let it dry completely, then repeat the same step for your cleaning code once. If a faint mark is left, see the set-in section, and don't keep scrubbing.
What if I can't read the cleaning code?
Don't guess with water or solvent, since a wrong cleaner can shrink, fade or ring the fabric. Dab the spill with a dry towel, then have an upholstery pro identify the material before any product goes on the spot.
Can I take the cushion cover off and wash it?
Usually not. Washing a cover can shrink it or change its dye, and it may no longer sit right on the frame. Clean the spot in place, using the cool steps that match your code.
Can I steam clean the couch to get the yogurt out?
Not on the spot. Heat sets the protein in place, and a steam pass can leave the yogurt darker than before. Stick with cool cleaning, and save any deep steam job for a professional once the spot is gone.
Why is there a ring after I cleaned it?
Rings usually come from too much liquid or from a slow dry. Dampen the rest of the panel so the edge blends, and use a fan on cool to finish. Next time, keep the liquid light and blot until the cloth stops picking up color.
